Coffee Beauty Benefits

Coffee has a mixed reputation; from the old tale that it can stunt your growth to serious studies about its effect on heart stress, the concerns are many. The truth is that, with a dose of moderation and a pinch of savvy usage, your tryst with coffee could be more than just a morning wake up call.

Coffee as we know it is actually the roasted seed of the coffee berry, a beautiful red fruit that legendarily was discovered by a goat herder who noticed his flock getting a little too frisky when they nibbled on these particular shrubs.

The bean is removed from the outer casing (the coffee “cherry”) and in some places that outer casing is even dried and used in a delicious tea blend called Kishr, which tastes a lot like Chai with an extra kick.

Some legitimate concerns about coffee are that, when consumed in excess, it can dehydrate you, increase stress levels and disrupt your sleep. None of these, by the way, are good for your skin! They can leave you dry, breakout-prone and create fine lines on your pretty face.

When taken in moderation, however, coffee has myriad uses and is notoriously a great mental stimulant. So what else can this wonder fruit do for us? Some of my favorite java fueled beauty-boosters include:

Exfoliating Your Skin:
Coffee grounds are a great body exfoliator. The caffeine helps smooth and tighten your skin, while the manual scrubbing will polish you from head to toe. All you need is to mix a tablespoon of coffee grounds with a tablespoon of an oil of your choice (the Om Aroma + Co. Sweet Baby Oil works wonders for this) and scrub the mixture gently over your skin.

Reducing Cellulite:
Not only can coffee keep your skin silky smooth on the outside, it can actually help melt away small fat deposits known as cellulite beneath your skin. Caffeine enhances fat metabolism and also helps combat puffiness, which is why we use it in our Caviar + Caffeine Eye Treatment at Savor Spa. At home, you can make a quick cellulite reduction treatment by mixing warm used coffee grounds with just enough coconut oil to create slip. Then, rub the mixture in circular motions across your skin for just a few minutes, and rinse away!

Luminizing Hair Treatment:
Coffee can help your hair gain a healthy sheen and may also temporarily deepen and enrich your color (particularly for those of us who already have mocha hair). To treat your tresses, brew a fresh pot of joe, let it cool, and rinse it through dry, clean hair. Tie your hair up in a bun and leave it in for at least twenty minutes, then rinse. If you do this for a few days in a row, you’ll see the best results.

Try a few of these at home, and let us know your thoughts! What results did you see?
