Even though we’re loving fall, there’s one thing that starts to disappear along with our flip-flops, organic BBQ and accidental tan lines: the sun!

While sunshine is obviously not great for you in large doses, it does provide vital benefits that are not only good for your mood, but for your skin. That’s right. We’re talking Vitamin D!

Vitamin D is obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements. It is biologically inert, meaning that it must undergo certain bodily reactions in order to be  produced and activated in the body.

Our skin produces Vitamin D3 when exposed to the sun’s UVB rays. Good amounts can be made in the skin after only 10-15 minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week without sunscreen! A solid Vitamin D boost makes the skin healthy, and promotes “rapid healing” according to the Milady’s book. But of course, do remember to protect the skin if you plan to stay out longer than the suggested length of exposure. Plus, it is important to use an everyday sun-protectant (like our Red Raspberry Serum).

Producing the proper amount of Vitamin D depends on certain factors like skin tone and location. People with darker skin tones need to spend more time out in the sun to produce the same amount of vitamin D as those with with lighter skin tones.

The amount of time required to produce a proper amount of vitamin D may also depend upon the person’s distance from the equator and on the season of the year. So, if it’s autumn where you are, feel free to linger for a few extra minutes while you grab your daily dose of D.

Sunbathing aside, other natural sources of Vitamin D include: fatty fish, fish liver oil, eggs, beef liver and fortified milk. If you don’t have time to catch some rays, a serving of these will help you get the Vitamin D you need for healthy skin.
