Someone once said: “A face without freckles is like a night sky without stars.”
Freckles or spots are highly concentrated areas of melanin. Melanin is the substance that gives the skin and hair its color. It acts as a built-in sunscreen, protecting the skin from ultraviolet light. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes, which rev up its production in response to sun exposure, skin irritation, and other internal factors like hormonal changes.
Another big role comes from the enzyme tyrosinase. This enzyme is: “responsible for the first step in melanin production” (source here.) Most skin care products that are designed to eliminate freckles and treat other hyper-pigmentation concerns will claim that they are “tyrosinase inhibitors”, meaning that they will somehow prevent the formation of new melanin, thus prevent new freckles/spots from forming. Some of these popular products include: hydroquinone (proven carcinogen), kojic acid, arbutin, amongst others.
Honestly I don’t understand why some ladies would go through so much trouble to get rid of their freckles! I happen to think that they are adorable. Like the above quote suggests, freckles are like constellations of stars on the skin. They make us unique and beautiful. Long live freckles!
