Happy Halloween, eco-beauties! While some may share stories around a campfire, we prefer uncovering spooky ingredients lurking right in your beauty bag. Fear not! These three ingredients won’t haunt your skin forever. To avoid these scary ingredients, check out our skin-safe swaps and say “hello!” to a healthy + green Halloween!
- Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate — A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos for its cleansing and foam-building properties. Often derived from petroleum, it is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics. It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions. For a safer alternative, look for SLS + SLES free cleansers that contain skin softening saponified coconut or olive oils. Sulfate-free Om Aroma & Co. Pearl Cleansing Cream is great for dry, sensitive, and mature skin, while the Champagne Cleanser is best for normal to oily types.
- Petrolatum, Mineral Oil — Also known as petroleum jelly, this mineral oil derivative is used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body’s own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. For sustainable moisture, look for plant based emollient ingredients that benefit the skin such as cocoa butter, vitamin E, and oils like sweet almond or rosehip. We love supremely hydrating Truffle Face Cream which contains skin nourishing vitamins, minerals, and peptides that deliver nutrients to your skin.
- Synthetic Fragrances — Synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read “fragrance”. Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, and skin irritation. Steer clear of all synthetic fragrances and opt instead for products using only nature’s bounty — essential oils! Om Aroma & Co. products are 100% synthetic fragrance free and smell heavenly thanks to various plants and flowers such as lavender, honeysuckle, jasmine, neroli and rosemary.
