Self-care is a vital part of our overall wellness. You can’t be your best for your business, your family, or yourself when you are running on an empty tank. Here are 5 reasons you should consider doing a cleanse this season.
1. BECAUSE WE ARE LITERALLY SURROUNDED BY TOXINS.
First and foremost, our worlds are more toxin-filled than ever before. It’s causing us to be sicker than ever and we need to do something about it if we want to have a long, healthy life. For example, conventional foods are filled with pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, sweeteners, artificial colors and preservatives. Our soil isn’t as nutrient rich as it once was, and our water AND air have become contaminated with pollutants. Of course, if you aren’t using totally natural skincare, you’re also applying toxic chemicals to our body’s largest organ: our skin, which is an extremely porous membrane. What we put on our skin affects our health just as much as what we put into our mouths! Carcinogens in beauty products even create greater risks than eating contaminated food.
Add in daily stresses, alcohol and maybe even cigarettes exposure, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to detox!
2. BECAUSE OUR LIVER IS A POWERHOUSE, BUT IT CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH.
Sure, our liver has enzymes that detoxify the things we eat. But with the overload we experience on a daily basis, toxins build up in our bodies (and even cling to fat cells making them harder to get rid of). And if you’re not eating enough cleansing foods, such as fiber, it’s harder for your body to efficiently move waste through your intestines.
3. BECAUSE BAD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN TOXINS ACCUMULATE.
The result can range from the less severe issues like bloating, indigestion and acne, to more serious forms of dis-ease in the body. Not to mention the mental health issues that may accompany like anxiety and depression. Your body, your organs and your cells are powerful, but they cannot do what nature intended them to do when their powers are suppressed. Over time, their powerful abilities can end up buried. The toxins need to go and they need to go now!
4. BECAUSE THE SEASONS ARE CHANGING AND SELF-CARE IS VITAL.
It’s best to cleanse with the change of the seasons, four times per year is preferable. For some people that may be unrealistic, so at the very least, you should aim to cleanse once per year. For women, I find it easier to cleanse around menstruation. Most women tend to lose appetite on that first day… so why not cleanse while your body is naturally cleansing and rejuvenating? This is also normally a time when you are resting more.
Sometimes it feels our lives are too busy and hectic, but it’s imperative to make time for your body and mind to relax and restore itself. For many people, cleansing is also an excellent time for introspection, visualization, meditation and yoga practices and it’s common to have a “spiritual breakthrough” of sorts.
Other holistic therapies like massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and colonics do help aid in the detoxing process, but start slowly. If you are feeling especially sluggish, (i.e. drink coffee / alcohol everyday, eat processed/contaminated foods, smoke, wear many body products) you might have a harder time cleansing and may experience more side effects. We recommended things like “body brushing” or “tongue scraping” to aid detoxing.
5. BECAUSE THE BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE SIDE EFFECTS.
Some side effects during a cleanse will mimic allergies or being sick. This is natural and essential to go through. Increased mucus production (even NOT during a cleanse) is your body’s way of naturally washing away infected cells & removing virus particles from the body. A fever even means the body is hard at work activating white blood cells that are made to seek out and destroy invading viruses!
Not everyone experiences such severe symptoms, but it is important that you are aware of what’s going on inside your body. By the second or third day, you may not experience many symptoms at all, not even hunger!
WHICH CLEANSE TO CHOOSE
If possible, work with a trained practitioner or holistic health coach to customize a plan that will work for you. There are many cleanse options available. Ultimately, we want to move toward a more balanced overall and remember that there is no overnight magic pill or quick fix, but making healthy choices will bring us steps closer to clear skin and vibrant health!
